Exeter, New Hampshire is situated on both the fresh water Exeter River and the salty Squamscott River, which intersect through a series of dams in the center of the town. Located within easy reach of the seacoast, the city of Boston, the scenic expanse of the Lakes Region and the snowy peaks of the White Mountains, the town offers excellent schools, a thriving local business climate, stunning natural and historical scenery and bountiful opportunities for receation and leisure. Rockingham County has been cited on numerous occasions as one of the best locations in which to establish a home and a business.

Originally inhabited by the Squamscott Indians, the community was established in 1638 by the reverend John Wheelright and his followers, who had been banished from the Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony for their religious views. One of the first four townships in the New Hampshire colony, the community remained largely rural through its early years. Edward Gilman, Jr. built the first sawmill in 1653; his family later amassed a considerable fortune through trade with the West Indies and donated the land upon which historic Phillips Exeter Academy, one of the foremost preparatory schools in the nation, was first built. In 1774, New Hampshire's rebellious Provincial Congress began to meet in the Town House after it was banned from the colonial capitol at Portsmouth by Governor John Wentworth. The following year, the Provincial Congress seized provincial records from royal officials in Portsmouth and had them brought to the town; thus, the community became New Hampshire's Revolutionary War capital, holding the designation until New Hampshire achieved statehood in 1789.

Over the course of the 19th century, the town emerged as a center for manufacturing and attracted notice for its many architectural landmarks. Among the several historic buildings that still stand are the Old Town Hall, built in 1855; the Old Public Library, built in 1894; Phillips Church, built in 1897; and Tuck High School, built in 1911.

The community maintains a desirable balance of country and city, modern and old fashioned, traditional and progressive through utstanding opportunities in education, strategic business location, a skilled labor force, no state income tax and an excellent quality of life. Few places in the world can claim such close proximity to both ocean shores and mountain peaks, rivers and lakes, modern cities and historic villages. The area is central to all this and more, conveniently located at the hub of major highways and interstates, railroad lines and airports. This scenic town is rich with history, yet more than ready to enter the 21st century.

NEW HAMPSHIRE (NH) THE BEAUTIFUL -- "LIVE FREE OR DIE"

"Why did you move to New Hampshire?"

Most newcomers would answer that question with three simple words: "quality of life." This is an area where young parents want to raise their kids and then stay once the nest is empty - where neighbor knows neighbor, strong community ties develop and friendships endure. There is an unmistakable feeling of COMING HOME to the beauty of a land that overwhelms you and makes you want to live here forever.

Tucked into a corner of the northeastern United States, the state is the most mountainous of the six contiguous states that comprise New England. Shaped like a right triangle, the "Granite State" shares a boundary with the Canadian province of Quebec to the north, the winding Connecticut River and the state of Vermont to the west, the state of Maine and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and Massachusetts to the south.

Anywhere you choose to call home in the state is just a short day trip from the city, the mountains or the ocean. The Merrimack Valley and Seacoast regions, which make up most of the southern tier, are each about an hour from the many attractions of the greater Boston area. Less than a 2-hour drive to the north are the majestic mountains of the Presidential range and the extensive waterways that form the Lakes Region.

Whatever your lifestyle, New Hampshire the Beautiful has a region to suit it!

Climate:
The State's weather is as varied as its terrain, boasting the beauty of four very different seasons. We have snow in the winter, new life blooms in springtime, our summers are full of perfect beach weather, and we boast some of the nation's most beautiful foliage in the fall.

Population:
The State has a population of just over 1.3 million people. The state's population has just about doubled since 1960.

Government:
New Hampshire's state capitol is Concord, situated along the Merrimack River in the south central region of the state. The state government has three branches; Executive, Legislative and Judicial, headed by a State Supreme Court.

Taxes:
Many people are drawn to New Hampshire for the lack of a state income tax and the lack of a sales tax. There is a tax on unearned income over a certain amount every year, and there is a property tax.

Liquor:
A great deal of revenue is obtained through sales from state-owned liquor stores. You must be 21 years of age to legally purchase or consume any alcoholic beverages.

Education:
Local school boards administrate school districts in the State. These boards have authority to make all rules and regulations of the government, organization and grading in the district.
